The Armenian Quran translation project

The Armenians are a people with ancient and colourful traditions; a nation with a proud, if not troubled, history. Armenians are also the only Near Eastern nation, besides the Jews, not to have a Muslim majority. In fact, in 301 CE, Armenia became the first ever country to embrace Christianity as its state religion. Today, the country remains an island of Christianity in a sea of Islam. Many world powers have exploited the differing religious confessions of Armenians and Muslims to pit these two neighbours against each other. And yet there has been very little effort, if any, on the part of Islamic states or organisations to enlighten the Armenians to true faith of Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad and the Prophets (upon whom be the Peace of Allah).

At Quran.nu, we hope to help make ammends by overseeing the first ever complete modern translation of the (meanings of the) Holy Quran into Armenian. Once completed, such a work will naturally be of great benefit to the small but substantial Armenian Muslim minority; helping them to learn their religion, worship their Lord, guide their community, and present Islam to the larger, non-Muslim society within which they mostly reside. We also have every reason to be confident that, with the Quran accessible to them in their own language and script, many Christian Armenians will come to appreciate Islam and, insha'Allah, embrace the religion. Furthermore, as Muslims, the potential contribution of Armenians to the wider Islamic world would most likely be huge - especially considering the industrious and influential Armenian Diaspora who form large communities in North America, Russia and the Middle East.

Our project to translate the Quran into Armenian is all the more exciting because Armenian is one of the few languages to have its very own written script. So from a literary point of view alone, the contribution of an "Armenian Quran" to world culture and heritage cannot be overstated.
